Choose your cut

Point at it. Then say it.

Turning up with a photo is the single best thing you can do for your haircut. Second best is knowing the words. Every cut below has both — and every one of them has been done in this chair.

7 cuts

  • Straight or thickTaperLength kept

    Textured cut, Low Taper

Length kept on top and through the back, with the weight cut out by hand. Tapered low around the ear and down the neck.

    Say this in the chair

    • Keep the length on top and through the back — take the weight out, not the length.
    • Low taper around the ear and down the neckline.
    • Point-cut through the top so it moves, rather than a blunt line.
    • Leave my natural texture in.
    Suits
Wavy or thick hair that gets heavy rather than short hair that needs building up. If your hair goes wide instead of down, this is the one that fixes it.
    Upkeep
Holds its shape four to six weeks. Grows out soft rather than square.
  • CurlyFade

    Curly top Taper

Curls left full on top, faded through the temple, with the front hairline squared off clean.

    Say this in the chair

    • Mid fade — start it about halfway between my ear and my temple.
    • Do not thin the curls out on top, just take the length down.
    • Line the front up, but keep it soft — not a hard block.
    • Cut it dry so you can see where the curl sits.
    Suits
Tight curls and coils. The fade does the shaping so the curl on top can be left alone — which is what keeps it looking like hair rather than a helmet.
    Upkeep
The fade blurs at about three weeks. The top can go longer.
  • Straight or thickFadeLength kept

    Burst fade

Spiked and pushed up through the top and front, over a mid skin fade that runs clean around the back.

    Say this in the chair

    • Blowout — keep the top long enough to push up and forward.
    • Mid fade into the skin on the sides, taken round the back.
    • Keep the corners at the front, do not round them off.
    • Show me how you are styling it so I can do it at home.
    Suits
Straight or coarse hair with enough weight to stand up. Needs product and two minutes in the morning — it is not a wash-and-go cut.
    Upkeep
A skin fade is sharp for about two weeks, tidy for three.
  • CurlyFadeLength kept

    Mullet, burst fade

Curl left full on top and long through the back, with the fade arced around the ear and taken to skin just behind it.

    Say this in the chair

    • Mullet — keep the length at the back. Do not shorten it to tidy it up.
    • Burst fade around the ear — arced, not run straight up the side.
    • Leave the curl on top. Take the weight out of it, not the length.
    • Taper it instead of fading it if you want the same shape played down.
    Suits
Curly or wavy hair with enough weight at the back to hold a shape. It is a haircut with an opinion — say so if you want it softened.
    Upkeep
The burst blurs at about three weeks. The back can be left alone for two months.
  • Straight or thickFadeCropped short

    Textured crop, mid fade

Short and piecey on top, pushed forward into a broken fringe, over a mid fade that drops in behind the ear.

    Say this in the chair

    • Textured crop — short on top, but cut into it so it stays piecey rather than sitting flat.
    • Mid fade, dropped behind the ear rather than run straight round.
    • Leave me a fringe I can push forward. Keep the ends broken, not a blunt line.
    • Line the temples up.
    Suits
Straight to slightly wavy hair. The shortest cut on this page that still leaves something to style, and the fringe covers the front corners if yours are going back.
    Upkeep
Two to three weeks before the fade softens. Thirty seconds of product in the morning.
  • WavyTaperLength kept

    Wavy top, low taper

Natural wave kept full on top and through the back, tapered low around the ear, with the front hairline lined up.

    Say this in the chair

    • Low taper — keep it under the ear. I do not want it coming up the side.
    • Leave the wave in. Take the bulk out, not the length.
    • Line the front and the temples up.
    • Keep some weight at the back so it does not sit flat against my neck.
    Suits
Wavy hair that already moves on its own. The same family as the textured low taper, with one difference that matters in the mirror: the front is lined up, so it reads sharper.
    Upkeep
Four weeks. The line-up at the front goes first, at about two.
  • Beard

    Beard, shaped to the face

Beard shaped to your jaw and cheek line, blended into the cut rather than treated as a separate job.

    Say this in the chair

    • Shape it to my jaw — follow the line, do not cut a straight one across.
    • Take the cheek line down to where it grows, not higher.
    • Blend it into the sideburn so there is no step.
    • Keep the length, just tidy the outline.
    Suits
Included in the Haircut & Beard sitting. Worth it if your beard and your cut currently look like two decisions instead of one.
    Upkeep
Two to three weeks to stay sharp; longer if you are growing it out.

Not sure which one?

Bring a photo of your hair at its best and a photo of what you want. Say what you did not like about your last cut. That is enough to work with — you are not expected to know the terminology, and the guide explains it if you want it.
